Tulum

Tulum is a great archeological destination in Quintana Roo, which also has amazing beaches.

Located in the center of the Rivera Maya area, Tulum is one of the most important archaeological destinations in the region.

Surrounded by dense tropical jungle and in close proximity to the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, Tulum has several Mayan archaeological constructions, built between 1200 and 1450 AD.

The name "Tulum" means "Wall" in the Mayan language, but the original name of the town was "Zama" which means "Rising Sun" or "Dawn".

Tulum Archaeological Zone

Along with Chichen Itza, Tulum is a renowned archaeological site, a must for lovers of the history of ancient civilizations.

When visiting Tulum, you can appreciate constructions dating from the years 1200 and 1450 that perfectly represent the characteristics of Mayan architecture.

In the archaeological zone there is a building called El Castillo, considered one of the oldest constructions, and in its lower part there is a kind of cave that refers to the underworld.

Another construction is the Templo del Dios Descendente (Temple of the Descending God), with a particular asymmetrical façade decorated with the image of this god.

In the Temple of the Frescos are the famous internal walls painted in gray and blue.

And the beaches are less crowded than Cancun or Playa del Carmen, ideal for those who want tranquility and relaxation.

Another attraction of Tulum is the "cenotes", fresh water wells that are connected to underwater caverns, where diving and snorkeling are practiced.
