Isla Mujeres is located in the Caribbean Sea, close to the coast of Cancun.
"Isla Mujeres" means "Women Island".
This island is 7.5 km long and 1-2 km wide.
Origin of the island name
The name "Isla Mujeres" (Women Island), has its origin in the Mayan goddess "Ixchel" whom the Mayans worshipped as the protector goddess of love and fertility and made the island a sanctuary for her.
When the Spaniards discovered the island, they saw several offerings with female figures and have baptized the island with the current name.
